Confronting Genocide
Australia is taking action after its citizens were captured by Israeli forces on the high seas and taken to Israel. Foreign Minister Penny Wong has met with four of the eleven Australians from the Gaza aid Global Sumud Flotilla, and heard allegations of kidnapping, physical torture, and sexual assault while in Israeli custody. In response, the Australian Federal Police has begun an investigation.
The flotilla group has also lodged a submission with the International Criminal Court alleging war crimes, crimes against humanity, torture and other breaches of international law against Palestinians. This adds to an active trial against Israel at the International Court of Justice, brought by South Africa, for the crime of genocide.
We speak here with flotilla volunteer Anny Mokotow, and two journalists who have been reporting on the story, Andrew Brown and Michael West.

Israel disregards International Law with Impunity, yet again
Gaza aid flotilla activists tortured in Israeli custody as court extends detention, lawyer says
An Israeli court has extended the detention of Spanish activist Saif Abu Keshek and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila, who were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla trying to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Israeli forces intercepted their ships in international waters earlier this week.
Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, is demanding the release of the Spanish detainee.
“Now that Netanyahu has done this, abducting foreign citizens, one of them is Spanish, and taking him to Israel. I say several things to Prime Minister Netanyahu.
The first is that Spain will always protect its citizens.
The second is that we will always defend international law. And this is a new violation of international law.
And the third is we want the release of the Spanish citizen who has been illegally abducted by Netanyahu’s government.
